The Condo.
Seven hundred square feet spread across two floors inside a gated building with a daytime doorman, halfway up a hillside in Vidigal. Designed by a Los Angeles interior designer who believed the 360-degree view deserved better than beige. Magazine-featured. Solar-heated soaking tub. One 1920s Louis XV chair, restored. Two guests, one queen bed, zero elevator.
The short version.
It's the nicest apartment in Vidigal, in a neighborhood that's the real Rio de Janeiro, four minutes from a beach most tourists never find.
Two floors of very particular ideas.
A living room with a wall that isn't there.
The main floor is designed around a single proposition: that the view of Vidigal's hillside sweeping down into the Atlantic is the whole point. A sliding glass wall opens onto a private balcony. Low-slung seating angles toward the window, not toward each other. The 1920s King Louis XV chair, which a previous owner restored with its original fabric intact, sits near a corner where it gets morning sun.
Behind the living area is the full gourmet kitchen: cobalt blue lower cabinets, a marble backsplash, a five-burner gas range, a French-door refrigerator, a coffee maker, a kettle, a toaster, an oven with a broiler, a microwave. It is a kitchen designed for the people who cook while on vacation, not because they must, but because they want to. Moqueca is recommended. Breakfast is essential — the morning light on the balcony is the reason people get up at six.
A small dining corner seats two. A 43-inch smart TV lives on an articulating arm. Nobody has ever used it for more than fifteen minutes — the window wins.

A bedroom you wake up in on purpose.
Up the interior staircase: a queen bed against a wall of plants, framed by floor-to-ceiling windows that open directly onto the Atlantic. When the wind shifts you can hear the waves at Vidigal beach, four minutes downhill. In a city of tropical mornings, waking up here is a compounded advantage.
The bathroom is the rare kind that people photograph. Deep blue Portuguese-style tile. A standalone soaking tub heated by a rooftop solar system — yes, really. Brass fixtures. A walk-in shower separate from the tub. Towels, soap, shampoo, body wash, and a hair dryer are all provided; so are bathrobes for the deck in the morning.
A second balcony opens off the bedroom. It is smaller, quieter, and faces slightly more toward the mountain. It's the right place for a coffee, a phone call home, or a long silent minute at 7 a.m.
A private terrace that stops conversations.
Off the first floor: a private deck that wraps the corner of the building. This is the view you saw in the listing photo that made you click. Dois Irmãos mountain to the right, open Atlantic straight ahead, Ipanema and Leblon visible on a clear day to the left. Sunset happens behind you, which means you watch it paint the ocean instead of squinting at the sky.
The deck is furnished for lingering: two lounge chairs, a small dining table for two, a standing lamp for nights, and planters that hold what looks like the same plants that are draped through the apartment's interior. There is an outdoor shower off the side for rinsing off sand from the beach. There are no neighbors on the deck side — nobody is watching you eat breakfast in a robe.

Everything you'd expect. And a soaking tub.

The most overthought part of the trip.
From the airport.
Rio has two airports. Galeão (GIG) handles international arrivals — most flights from North America and Europe land here. It's a 45-to-90-minute drive depending on traffic, which can swing wildly during weekday rush hours. Santos Dumont (SDU) is the smaller downtown airport for domestic flights from São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, and other Brazilian cities — it's 20 to 30 minutes away.
Your best option is our airport pickup service (R$120 flat). The driver lives five minutes down the street from the apartment. He knows the building, knows the doorman, has keys, and will not protest when your luggage is heavier than expected. Pay in cash on arrival or by Pix.
Uber and 99 (Brazil's version of Uber) both work at both airports. You'll pay roughly R$180–260 depending on traffic and the car class. Drivers sometimes hesitate when they see "Vidigal" as the destination — this is because the road up to the apartment is narrow and switchbacks tightly near the top. Message us if your driver cancels. We have a workaround.
Once you're here.
You don't need a car in Rio, and you definitely don't need one in Vidigal. What you need:
- Moto-taxi — R$5, one minute, faster than walking uphill. Not recommended with luggage.
- Regular taxi — call from the apartment, R$10–15 to the main road.
- Uber / 99 — works fine for longer trips to Leblon, Ipanema, Copacabana.
- Walking — downhill to the beach is four minutes, the most scenic part of your day.
- The 557 bus — runs along Avenida Niemeyer at the bottom of the hill, connects to Copacabana and Centro for R$4.70.
- Metro — nearest station is General Osório in Ipanema, 15 minutes by Uber.
The answers to the questions.
Is Vidigal safe?
Yes. Vidigal has been pacified since 2011 and is one of the safest favelas in Rio — a fact confirmed by the Brazilian Ministry of Tourism, countless international guests, and the fact that David Beckham, the Pope, Kim Kardashian, and a rotating cast of global celebrities have all stayed or filmed here. We use normal city-traveler common sense: don't walk alone late at night in unfamiliar areas, don't flash expensive jewelry, and use licensed transportation. We've had 115+ guests with zero incidents. For a longer answer, read our safety guide →
Is the apartment actually inside a favela?
Yes, and that's the point. Vidigal is a bohemian favela — meaning a community of artists, expats, long-time residents, and a significant tourism economy. The apartment is inside a gated residential building with a daytime doorman. You walk five minutes up a hillside street to get to it. Once inside, it is indistinguishable from any luxury apartment anywhere. The favela is the neighborhood; the apartment is the home.
How many people does it sleep?
Two. One queen-size bed on the second floor. There is no pull-out sofa and we don't recommend squeezing in extra guests — the apartment is designed for two people who want space to breathe.
Is there an elevator?
No. The apartment is on the third floor of a walk-up building. Bruno or our house manager will help with luggage. If you have mobility concerns, please message us before booking — we'll be honest with you about whether it's a fit.
What's the WiFi like?
150 MB symmetrical fiber. We've had guests take back-to-back Zoom calls from the dining table with no trouble. There's a dedicated workspace with a desk and natural light.
Do I need to speak Portuguese?
No. Bruno, our house manager, and our airport driver all speak English. Most restaurant and shop staff in Vidigal and the surrounding beach neighborhoods (Leblon, Ipanema) have at least some English. Google Translate handles the rest.
Can I book direct instead of through Airbnb?
Yes — and it's usually slightly cheaper because we don't pay Airbnb's service fee. Use the contact form or email [email protected]. Direct booking also gets you Bruno's WhatsApp on day one for restaurant recs, activity bookings, and any questions.
What's the minimum stay?
Three nights during most of the year. Five nights during New Year and Carnaval. Longer stays (one-month+) get a discount — ask directly.
Is there parking?
No dedicated parking, but street parking is available nearby and we can help arrange secure overnight parking at a paid lot for R$30/night. Most guests don't bother with a rental car.
Are kids allowed?
Children over 5 are welcome but the apartment sleeps two, so it's not a practical fit for families. The balconies are safe but don't have climbable rails. Discuss with us if you have a specific situation.
Can I cancel?
Yes. Our direct-booking cancellation policy is full refund up to 30 days before arrival, 50% refund 14–30 days before, no refund inside 14 days — with exceptions for medical and travel-restriction emergencies. Airbnb bookings follow Airbnb's policy.
Do you do long stays?
Yes. Stays of 28 nights or more get 20% off nightly rate and access to monthly housekeeping. We've hosted digital nomads, writers, and couples on extended trips. Message us.
